Background:

The Community Supported Garden at St. Joseph’s Center is an initiative of the Brothers of the Congregation of Holy Cross, a religious community which has been a good steward of this land for decades.  St. Joseph’s Center has been a space for vocation development, spiritual renewal, conferences, and, most recently, a peaceful retirement setting for many Holy Cross community members.  From 1957-1970, the property was a productive farm supplying food to Holy Cross schools in the Northeast.  Part of the land was recently placed into a conservation easement, representing a commitment by the Holy Cross community to exercise good stewardship of the land and to assure the site’s beauty and rural integrity.

What is a Community Supported Garden (CSG) or Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)?

These terms are interchangeable.  They represent a movement in the agricultural community of people joining together to make environmentally sound use of land and to share the proceeds of the harvest.  This model encourages relationships to be established; members are connected to a particular farm and farms have a direct relationship with those who eat the produce.  Typically, shareholders pay a yearly membership fee and collect a weekly share of the harvest.  Some gardens produce a year-round harvest; others a half-year.  Food is grown without the use of non-organic pesticides or any other chemicals which may harm the soil or the environment.

Why join a Community Supported Garden?

People join a Community Supported Garden for different reasons.  Most, however, wish to be part of a larger group of persons who care about what they eat, the manner in which their food is grown, and who wish to do what they can to promote a healthy environment.

Why join this Community Supported Garden?

The Holy Cross Community Garden is a new initiative of the Brothers of the Congregation of Holy Cross—a religious community known throughout the world.  With the financial support of the Holy Cross Brothers, a foundation is being laid for the development of this project.  The land has not been farmed for many years but is known for its richness and vitality.  Needed now are interested shareholders…people who want to be part of a faith-based community, who care about the environment and its future, and who wish to share the harvest with others.
